Hello everyone,
I'm Derek, a native Houston, but I've lived in Detroit for the past 12 years. I enjoy words, and love poetry for that very reason. I am an observer of life, and pay close attention to detail. (Interesting fact: after years of being a passenger on planes, I can now recite the entire pre-departure safety check from memory -- all by listening and paying attention. While most are absorbed in their phones, engrossed in an iPad, or napping, I am paying attention like a school kid sitting in the first row of class. This describes me: always paying attention). In terms of writing and reading habits: I admit that I don't have a consistent writing schedule, and once I start reading something, I am often very slow to finish it. I enjoy the community that workshops like this provide, and I hope to get stronger in my reading and writing of poems. I look forward to our time together!
