No New Posts "To Waken an Old Lady" by William Carlos Williams

One of the lesser discussed poems by Dr. Williams, it surely demonstrates his Imagism beliefs.

One of the groundbreaking poems of the seventies, there's a complicated beauty to this poem.

No New Posts "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar

As a rondeau, the poem follows a strict pattern that Dunbar handles remarkably. Consider what the formal constraints does for the poem.

Like "The Red Wheelbarrow" this poem's simplicity belies it formal complexities. Let's talk.

No New Posts "I Found a Dead Fox" by Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver's poem begins with the trappings of narrative. How does this opening lead us into the poem? How does it open to reverie? How does she use line break and stanza break to make meaning? I have numerous other questions, of course, from the symbolism of foxes to the leap at the end. I'm curious how you all read this.

No New Posts "Arrival at Santos" by Elizabeth Bishop

This poem captures the dichotomies of Bishop's work in many ways. I hope my discussion of it helps show how and why it is so successful. I'm curious as to your take on it.

No New Posts "A Display of Mackerel" by Mark Doty

I was asked to discuss this poem, and originally intended to write about it, until, as I was prepping to teach at Carlow for the MFA residency, I stumbled on Doty's "Souls on Ice" essay in one of my craft books. I thought to let him speak for himself.

No New Posts "Pied Beauty" by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Hopkins is a complicated poet with an incredible ear/mouth. He understands how the aural/oral elements of a poem breathe life into the body of the reader.
